  • Northern Ireland housing system in need of repair

    时间:2016-05-13 15:39 来源:CIH官网 CIH编辑:admin

Ahead of the Assembly elections, the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) Northern Ireland has published its Agenda for Change. According to housing professionals locally, housing and homelessness needs to be a higher priority for the new government. Nicola McCrudden, CIH director for Northern Ireland, said “CIH members have a clear message for Stormont – our housing system is in need of urgent repair and must be a higher priority in the new programme for government.”

Ms McCrudden explained "We need over 11,000 new homes each year in both the private and social housing sectors but build on average 5,500. With 20,000 households in stress on the waiting list for social housing, those who are elected to the new Assembly need to step up to the mark. Building homes is good for the economy – creating jobs in design, planning, construction, legal and housing management, all of which contributes positively to local businesses.

"But it’s not all about new homes. We also need to provide a range of housing options to meet different needs. One in five people rent privately – some by choice but others because they have no alternative. ‘Generation rent’ is here to stay so we need to make sure private rented housing is a better place to live for everyone, regardless of income or background."

In Northern Ireland, housing has a specific role to play. Commenting on this, Ms McCrudden said "Housing needs to be part of our shared future. Despite best efforts, social housing is still segregated and contributes to ongoing inter-communal tensions. We need a step change in shared housing and better ways for tenants and residents to participate through social housing providers to help build stronger and safer communities."

The CIH Northern Ireland Agenda for Change calls for the next government to adopt recommendations under five main areas:

      More good quality homes

New social and affordable housing approaches

      Greater access to rented housing

      Shared and mixed housing

      Professional standards in private rentals

These and other issues will be discussed at a housing and homelessness hustings on Friday 15 April at Girdwood Community Hub.
